I hope you all had a wonderful holiday! Here are a few events that are happening this week in our community.

The Angel Trees are now up at the Lorane Family Store and the Crow High School Gymnasium. The Angels on the trees will include an age, gender and a suggestion of a gift or item that the child is in need of, such as shoes, coat or p.j.s. Please be sure to return the unwrapped gifts no later than December 15, to give Santa’s elves enough time to wrap before delivery. We are still accepting requests for assistance, so if you or someone you know is in need of assistance putting gifts under the tree this year. Please contact Marissa at 541-517-6608. The only requirements are that you live in Lorane or Crow or that your child attends a C-A-L school and are between the ages of birth to 18.

The Crow Booster Clubs alumni tournament is coming up fast! The tournament will be December 9 and 10. There will also be a silent auction, raffles and dessert social on Saturday before Saturday’s games. We are still looking for alumni for the women’s and men’s teams. If you are interested in playing, sign ups will be held at 5 p.m. on Friday the 9th at the high school gym. If you aren’t interested in playing, you can still come out; support your alma mater and cheer on your former classmates. It is a really fun weekend, hope to see you there! The RAC monthly Movie Night will be held December 10 at the Lorane Grange starting at 6pm. They will be showing the classic original “It’s a Wonderful Life” starring Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed. There will also be a Uke Club concert and holiday sing along. It will be a fun night for the whole family.

The Lorane Grange is holding their annual Christmas dinner and open house December 11th at 1:30 p.m. at the Lorane Grange. All are invited to attend! The grange will provide the turkey, ham, potatoes and beverages. Please feel free to bring a side dish or dessert and a non-perishable food item for the Lorane Community Christmas food baskets.

The Lorane/Crow area had a scare this past week. Our hotter temperatures have increased our levels of fire danger dramatically and a small logging operation located in the hills behind the Knee Deep Ranch on Lorane Highway caused a wildfire to erupt. We saw the smoke across the ridges as we were going home from Lorane last Tuesday afternoon. Within an hour or so, helicopters towing water buckets began flying over our house on the way to extinguish the fire. In addition, we were told that bulldozers from the Crow side of those hills were dispatched to begin building a fire line. Thanks to the efforts and quick response of so many, the fire was completely contained by Tuesday evening after burning 13 to 16 acres. It was a close call… too close for those of us who remember the devastating wildfire we experienced last year, much closer to Lorane. Thank you to all of those who responded to this emergency. It could have been much worse.

On Saturday, August 6th at 4:00 p.m., plan to attend the Crow Grange’s 8th annual Chicken n Pickin BBQ. They will serve their legendary BBQ chicken, fresh corn on the cob, baked beans, rolls, lemonade, coffee and ice cream. In addition to the good food, you will be entertained by the Poodle Creek Pickers, a local old-time fiddlers group. The price for all of it is $10.00/person. Then, on Sunday, August 14, it’s Lorane’s turn to celebrate our annual Lorane Community Potluck and Ice Cream Social. The potluck, held annually at the Lorane Grange, begins at 12:30 p.m. The doors open at about 10:30 a.m. for those who want to drop off food or come early and visit with their neighbors. It’s a great way to connect with neighbors and friends and you’ll be ready to head out afterwards for more dessert and entertainment at the Lorane Ice Cream Social, sponsored by the Lorane Fire Department. It runs from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. As I said in last week’s column, expect to find yummy homemade pies and ice cream and lots of fun activities for children and adults alike.

Just a reminder… The Rural Art Center has planned another exciting Summer Film Camp that will be held in the Art Room at Applegate Elementary. People of all ages are encouraged to join in this fun, FREE camp which will include the making of a movie. The first week of camp is scheduled for August 8-11, Monday through Thursday, from 9 a.m. until noon. It continues into the following week, August 15-18 at the same time. For those of you who are interested in acting, last weekend the Applegate Regional Theater at the former Central School north of Crow held open auditions of community members (including any in the Lorane and Crow areas) who are interested in becoming cast members or backstage workers (props, costumes, lighting, set design, stage management, ushering, concessions, etc.). If you missed those open auditions, you are still encouraged to contact them at art-inc@hotmail.com or 541-935-3636.

Michele Kau sent out a plea this week… The Crow Middle/High Booster Club is desperately in need of volunteers to help with their annual car show to be held September 10th at the high school. They are so low on help at this point that they are dangerously close to having to cancel it. This car show has been going for well over 10 years and has become one of the biggest money makers that our Booster Club has. The money raised goes to support many kids in our community through sports and academic programs. If you can help with set-up, concessions, or if you are knowledgeable about cars and can help judge the entries, your participation would be GREATLY appreciated. Summer is definitely here with the above-90-degree temps. I’ve been doing my watering early – this morning I was out wielding my garden hose at 6:30 a.m. before either the dogs or I had eaten our breakfasts.

I went down to our store yesterday about noon and saw that the Lorane Growers’ Market was all set up and there was even some kale waiting to be taken home. Two of our clerks at the store, Shauna and Marilyn, are very excited about the feature. Despite it being so early in the season, they said that there had been several things left that morning, including snow peas, kale and a couple of tomato plants. It didn’t take long for them to be taken. Unfortunately, we don’t have a cooler set up yet for the things that tend to wilt, so the kale was left behind, but we’ll make sure that is soon rectified. Until one is installed, if you have leafy vegetables that will not stand up in the hot weather, ask to have them put in the store’s walk-in cooler and put a note on the produce table to let people know that they are there. I’ll provide some index cards and a marker so that you can make your signs even when the cooler is in place. There probably won’t be much produce or many plants available until further along in the growing season. For now, be sure to check it out whenever you get the chance… and be sure to leave your donations to the Lorane Community Association’s community fund!

Volunteers are needed to help build the Rural Art Center’s Little Bitty Free Libraries that they will be providing in the Lorane area. They already began the project last Tuesday, but they will be meeting at the barn at the Blue Rooster Inn (82782 Territorial Hwy.) from 1:00-4:00 p.m. the following three Tuesdays (June 30, July 7 and July 14).

Liam Reardon is heading up the work parties as part of his Eagle Scout project. He has chosen a basic design for the structures that can be viewed at http://www.instructables.com/id/Little-Free-Library/. Donations of materials are needed. Call Amy (541-214-3963) or email Lisa (ruralartcenter@gmail.com) with questions about what is still needed.

The next meeting of the Lorane Celebration committee is scheduled for July 9 at 6:30 p.m. at the Lorane Grange. A community-wide garage sale will be taking place during the September 12th celebration. For more information on renting a table at the Grange or including your home sale on the area map, contact Lil Thompson, 541-942-5701. Many interesting events are being planned throughout the day and volunteer help is welcome. Plan to attend the meeting on July 9th if you are interested.

The Lorane, Oregon Facebook page keeps getting more and more useful as a community resource. We have 555 members as of this writing and we keep getting more each week. Of course, not all of our members currently live in Lorane, but many do and many are our neighbors in Crow and other nearby communities. All feel that they have some interest in our community and provide suggestions, support and comments to the various postings.

A new posting this past week was from a resident who was needing to find a local teen who would be willing to do some yardwork and help in the re-siding her barn. An enterprising young man responded that beginning next week, he would welcome the work. Soon, others were asking him if he’d be available to do some work for them, too. I’m sure that there must be other young people in Lorane and Crow who would like to earn some extra cash. If so, please let us know. Once haying season is over, there are still jobs available for those who seek them out. If you don’t have a Facebook account, please let me know and I’ll try to connect you with potential employers in the area.

Jo-Brew and I will be at the Oregon Authors’ table at the Art & the Vineyard festivities in Alton Baker Park on Sunday, July 5. I’ll have the 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. shift and Jo will be there from 3 to 7 p.m. Stop by and see us if you have the chance. We’ll have copies of our books, OREGON’S MAIN STREET: U.S. Highway 99 and I’ll also bring copies of some of the recently-published books written by Michael J. “Hoss” Barker and Muriel “Ava” Linder (who was featured in last week’s Fern Ridge Review). My colleague, Veneta author, Jennifer Chambers will be there on Saturday, July 4, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Please come support your local Oregon authors!!
