I apologize for begging off from my column-writing duties last week. I had arthroscopic knee surgery scheduled for the day I usually try to turn in my columns and as I sat down the day before to get one out early, I was absolutely blank. I didn’t want to waste space talking about my surgeries or the weather and I had covered all of the upcoming events that I knew of, so Pam and Scott were kind enough to give me the week off.

As for my surgery, it went extremely well; I was off crutches and walking on my own at the end of the day following surgery and I have since (on Day 3 and Day 5) taken two 1-mile-long walks with our new little buddy, Toby. At one week since the surgery, I still have some swelling and the injection sites are still healing, but I’m good and no longer in pain.

So! That covers the surgery… and what can I say about the weather, but with the daffodils, crocuses and primroses blooming and a bit of sun peeking through the clouds quite often, how can we deny that spring is not on its way? Enjoy!

I have been asked to remind everyone about spreading the word on the upcoming “Crow Country 66” Reunion Dance featuring the music from the 1960s and 1970s that is being planned for Saturday, March 25 at 7:00 p.m. at the Crow Grange. There is no charge for this event and I don’t believe that you need to be a Crow alum to attend. Besides your dancing shoes, you are asked to bring a potluck dessert to share.

Another reminder… the Lorane Grange and Rural Art Center are joining forces once again this year to host the annual Lorane Talent Show. It’s a free event open to anyone, of any age, who wants to participate. Almost any kind of family-friendly talent is welcomed and encouraged. Maybe you are not a piano virtuoso, a Fred Astaire-type dancer or a Top-10 recording artist, but you have a special knack from your school days – however many years ago that may have been. What about doing a recitation, humorous skit, cheerleading or gymnastic moves, twirling a basketball on your index finger like a Globetrotter, telling jokes…? Or maybe you have a unique ability to do something amazing. If so, you are asked to sign up and share your talents with the community.

The show will be at the Lorane Grange on April 2, beginning at 3:00 p.m.  You can sign-up in advance by emailing ruralartcenter@gmail.com or calling Lil Thompson at 541-952-5701.  Come entertain everyone in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. I’m told that there is room for twenty 5-minute acts.

ATTENTION APPLEGATE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PARENTS: A discussion is currently taking place on the Crow Community Facebook page about an interest in establishing a PTA/PTO/PTC group at the Applegate Elementary School to represent the younger students. It has been suggested that instead of forming an entirely new non-profit group, that a committee, branching off of the current Crow Booster Club be set up for the purpose of fundraising and filling the elementary school needs and interests. Please be sure to join in on the discussion if you are interested in forming such a group.

The newly re-established Lorane Community Group will be meeting at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 11 at the Lorane Deli. They are seeking new members who want to help shape the way our community grows.

The group’s focus will be to create collaboration between the Grange, Rebekahs, Rural Art Center and Fire Department in order to build community. The plans are to set up separate committees that will key in on specific projects and meet separately. Projects being considered include a mural; “Welcome to Lorane” signs; an exercise group; disaster preparedness plan; community-wide yard sale event;  Growers Market, Santa’s Helper project; and food box drives.

If you’re interested in any of these projects, please plan to attend the April 11 meeting.

Our condolences go out to the family of Evan Mann who passed away this past week. Evan and Loretta lived on Letz Creek Road west of Lorane during the late 1960s and 1970s and their children attended the Lorane, Crow and Veneta schools.

News just arrived that the vacated Lane County Sheriff’s Office Work Camp located in Alma, west of Lorane, is now being set up for use by the Veterans Legacy Oregon, a non-profit group. Their mission statement on their Facebook page located at https://www.facebook.com/veteranslegacyoregon/ says, “Our mission at Veteran’s Legacy is to provide all support activities and therapies for our veterans suffering from PTSD and other associative disorders using therapeutic agriculture.”

They further describe their project as, “We exist to provide integrated treatment in a rural setting, stressing therapeutic agriculture, utilizing multiple resources to address the individual’s medical and psychological needs. We aspire to provide treatment for PTSD and other adjustment disorders while continuing supportive therapy for associated co-morbidities such as drug and alcohol addictions.”

I consider this good news for the county. These veterans deserve a chance to work through their PTSD under the supervision of such an organization in a quiet, beautiful setting as they have in Alma. It was frustrating to see all of the tax dollars that were put into the construction and maintenance of the work camp going to waste as it sat vacant for many years.

This week, I have volunteered to join the “Read Across America” program at the Applegate Elementary School. I will be reading Dr. Seuss books with students at Applegate on Wednesday and am really looking forward to it. It will be the first time I’ve participated, so I’ll have to let you know all about it next week.

The Rural Art Center and Grange are once again planning their annual Lorane Talent Show to be held in April. Now is the time for all of you who have a special talent to begin rehearsing and figuring out what you want to wear as you perform. Please contact Lisa Livelybrooks of RAC (541-935-9502) or Lil Thompson of the Lorane Grange (541-942-5701) if you want to participate this year. It’s not too early to start planning for it.

Here’s hoping that the coming weeks will bring us a little less rain and snow and a few  more days of sunshine. I’m so looking forward to spring this year!

Lorane Community News – April 7, 2016

Oh, it’s so hard to sit at this computer for long. With the beautiful spring weather we’ve been having, I’ve been bitten by the spring fever bug hard. I was really needing a good dose of that sunshine and warmth for not only my physical, but mental health, especially. It’s been a rough few months and that sunshine is really welcome.

I’ve built a petunia planter, which is already filled, planted 2 new rose bushes, and several tubs of flowers. I even jumped the gun a bit by planting a bunch of strawberries in a planter box and some tomatoes and cucumbers in another one. I hope I haven’t jinxed everyone’s hopes for no additional frost this spring, but I just couldn’t help myself.

Apparently the recent Lorane Talent Show, sponsored by the Rural Art Center and the Lorane Grange, was a huge success this year. In past years, there are sometimes rather small turnouts, but Lil Thompson reported that 11 different contestants from not only Lorane, but from neighboring communities of Sutherlin, Elmira, Eugene, Triangle Lake, Cottage Grove and Crow participated. In addition, over 50 people turned out to show their support and appreciation for the talent offered. It was a fun time for all as everyone visited over refreshments in the grange kitchen following the entertainment.

In addition to the talent show, the Lorane Grange hosted its annual Outstanding Community Awards to honor those chosen by each of the area’s organizations. Those receiving the awards this year are Markay Wilson (Lorane Christian Church), Jim Bailor (Lorane Fire Department), Jeri Porter and Carol Morehead (Lorane Grange), Effie Hughes (Lorane Rebekahs) and the Rural Art Center for its community service programs.

For you parents and grandparents who want to be able to check out the dates and times of upcoming Crow-Applegate-Lorane school district activities and athletics, information will now be included on the District’s website at http://www.cal.k12.or.us.  It will also have instructions or an app on the website to enable you to access info by your cell phone or tablet.

There’s some exciting news on the horizon for C-A-L students who will be 16 or older by June 2017. Plans are being discussed for a 12-day European adventure to Greece, Italy and Spain. A very important meeting is scheduled on Wednesday, April 13 at 6:30 p.m. for parents and students interested in such a trip. If you are unable to attend or need further information, you may contact Ms. Smith at asmith@cal.k12.or.us.

Both Lorane and Crow will be holding their dinner and bingo fundraisers on the same night this month – Saturday, April 16. For Lorane, dinner begins at 5:30 p.m. and bingo at 6:30 p.m. This will be the last one until September.

Crow’s doors open at 6:00 p.m. for dinner and bingo begins at 7:00 p.m. Please be sure to support our local granges. Lorane and Crow Granges have both given so much to their communities – not just their members – and it’s important to support them as much as possible. They are a large part of what makes our communities strong and so very special.

Happy spring everyone! It’s the time for track meets, flowers and gardens. My favorite time of the year!
