I’m going to try to get back on track this week with Lorane news, although there isn’t much of it right now. I missed reminders on a few events that have come and gone, but my hope is that I can share some of the messages from my heart with you, as needed, too.

Crow Middle/High School has announced that a new program on the study of Agriculture and Natural Resources has been approved. Students will now have the opportunity to explore careers in those fields. I also understand that the Crow-Applegate-Lorane school board also approved the establishment of an FFA Chapter.

To me, this is great news. Along with being offered instruction in some of the manual trades – mechanics, construction, welding, etc.—students who either might not be destined for a 4-year college education or who plan to go to college, but have shied away from considering agriculture and/or natural resources since the demise of the timber industry in Oregon, will get a chance to get some hands-on experience in these fields before setting their goals. It’s long been my belief that too much emphasis has been placed in recent years on getting formal college educations that they may not be able to afford and may lead no where. Kudos to C-A-L!

Mark your calendar! Lorane Eta Theta Rho, the girls’ youth service organization sponsored by the Lorane Rebekah Lodge has set a new date and time for their annual “Parents’ Night Out.” In the past, they have offered the gift of a night out to the parents of local children in the C-A-L school district during the holiday season. This year, however, they have scheduled it for Friday, February 15, from 4:30 to 10:30 p.m.

Parent’s Night Out is an evening where Eta Theta Rho Girls Club #94 provides free babysitting/daycare for the evening so parents can go on a date, relax at home, or do whatever they’d like to do, sans children. It is chaperoned by Eta’s adult female advisors. It will be held at the Lorane Rebekah Lodge at 80284 Old Lorane Rd, Lorane OR 97451. Contact Tara Wigle, Head Advisor (cell – 541-520-4151; or home – 541-935-5245), for more information.

The Celebration of Life for Sandy Larson, Veneta’s former mayor and friend to many of us from areas all over Lane County, will be held on Sunday, February 10, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. at the Fern Ridge Middle School in Elmira. Parking is expected to be limited at the school, but the lots at the Fern Ridge District Office, Elmira Elementary School and possibly, the church next to the Middle School are being made available, too. In lieu of flowers, those who want to contribute to Sandy’s memory are encouraged to do so through Mid-Lane Cares, Friends of the Fern Ridge Library, or the Applegate Regional Theatre.

My good friend and co-editor of Groundwaters, Jennifer Chambers, has been asked to conduct a 6-week series of classes called “A Winter Writing Workshop” on the basics of writing short stories and fiction. Jen, a recognized author of various genres of books and stories, has recently lectured around Oregon on her two most recent books, Oregon’s Remarkable Women: Revolutionaries and Visionaries and Hesitate No Longer: Abigail Scott Duniway and Susan B. Anthony in Oregon.

The classes will be held on Wednesday nights, beginning on February 20 and continuing through March 27 at the Fern Ridge Library’s Konnie Room from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The cost will be $50 for the entire series and you will get personalized feedback on your stories from Jen.

Oh, it seems there is no longer enough time in a day to get everything done lately. I can blame no one but myself… I love the work that I do and keep committing myself to more and more… but I sometimes feel as though I’m running in circles. I thought that retirement was all about having lots of free time to play golf, socialize, vacation and take naps. Ha!

Marissa McNutt Cooper, one of my co-administrators for our Lorane community Facebook page, has agreed to take on the principle duties as lead administrator. I will continue to help out, but I’ve got several book projects in the works and more in the wings so that I’m not checking in as much with the page as I used to. Thanks so much to my co-admins, Marissa and Lil Thompson, for all that they do for our community in so many ways.

Speaking of Marissa, she is also an active member of the Lorane Community Association (LCA). Several people have been asking that the LCA meetings be held on a weekend – preferably Sunday – instead of weekday mornings so that those who work can also participate.

The organizers heard the pleas and have scheduled a meeting for Sunday, October 1st at 1:30 p.m. at the Lorane Grange. According to Marissa, “We encourage anyone interested in our community service group to attend. A few of the LCA’s projects are the Lorane Growers Market, the Angel Tree and the Little Free Library. We have quite a few new projects we are working on as well. Including a canning and preserving clinic coming up soon.”

Does that Preservation and Canning Clinic pique your interest? If so here’s some information on that, too. It will be held at the Lorane Grange on October 20 through October 22. More details will be posted on the Lorane, Oregon Facebook page and in this column as soon as they are available.

Of course, you should by now have your calendars marked for the upcoming Crow Harvest Festival and Carnival to be held at the Applegate Elementary School on Saturday, October 28. I won’t go into detail again in this column, but I’ll keep reminding you.

The Lorane Grange’s Dessert and Bingo Night held last weekend was fun, but not well-attended. Now that the days are getting shorter, there usually is more participation and the fact that the next one will feature a Potato Bar Dinner as well as bingo should bring many more people out. That one is scheduled for Friday, October 27.

There’s another event that needs to be added to your calendars. The Lorane Rebekahs will be hosting their annual Lorane Hunter’s Breakfast on the morning of Saturday, September 30 from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m… Opening Day. For $5.00 per person you can get a hearty breakfast — pancakes, eggs, sausage, ham, orange juice and coffee.

One final announcement… Now that fall is approaching, Mike and Joanne Cantrall of Lorane, are once again collecting donations of warm clothing, shoes, socks, jackets, blankets and sleeping bags for homeless veterans. The Lane County organization that they collecting them for is having a “stand down” on Friday, October 13th. If you have anything to donate, please give them a call at 541-769-8205 and they will arrange to pick it up in the Lorane area. I believe that there will also be a donation barrel at the Lorane Family Store where these items can be dropped off.

Our rainy respite from the heat and wildfires last week was extremely welcome, but we’re ready for a bit more sunshine and warmth for a while longer, at least, before the winter rains set in.

Happy Fall, Everyone!

Aww… home, sweet, home! We’re back from an amazing family vacation in Hawaii, but before I say anything about our trip, let me give my heartfelt thanks to Marissa McNutt-Cooper for her great job in covering the many Lorane holiday events that are coming up as well as other Lorane news. She was unsure of how well she’d be able to do it, but I’d say that she’s a natural. Thank you, Marissa. I owe you one!

I’m not going to be able to recap our trip in this column… it would take up the whole issue of the paper, but our Hawaiian cruise and Thanksgiving luau get-together for 18 of our family members in Hawaii provided memories that are going to last each of us a lifetime. We owe the coordination and planning of it to our daughter, Gloria Edwards, who was the big motivator in getting all of us literally “on board.” Thank you, Glo!

Now on to Lorane news and a bit from Crow… Marissa covered the detailed information on many of these events in the last two issues, but I want to provide reminders here so that you’ll be sure to have them marked on your calendars.

The Lorane Grange’s Christmas Dinner and Open House is scheduled for Sunday, December 11. Dinner will begin at 1:30 p.m. If you want to share a side dish or dessert, please feel free to bring them, but they are not required. It is free to the community, but you are asked to bring non-perishable foods to donate to the community food drive.

The food drive is also taking place at the Lorane store, deli and organizations to collect provisions to fill the Lorane Community Food Baskets for the holidays. Let’s fill them all up!

In addition to the Lorane food drive, the Crow-Applegate Church of the Nazarene is conducting its own collection for the Lane County Food Pantry from the Crow area.

Marissa McNutt Cooper of the Lorane Community Association has set up Angel Trees in the Lorane Family Store and at  Crow High School. Those who want to participate are asked to take an ornament from a tree and provide a new gift for the child or teen described on it. The unwrapped gifts should be brought back to the place where you obtained the ornament. Help to make a child’s Christmas a little brighter this year.

Also, if you know of a family that you feel would benefit from either food or a gift, please contact the local organizers so that they can be included. (For the Angel Tree, contact Marissa McNutt Cooper, 541-517-6608; for the food drive, Sande Maxwell, 541-942-5083).

Reminder: On December 9, the Lorane Eta Theta Rho #94 girls’ group is offering free child care from 4:30 to 10 p.m. at the Lorane Rebekah Lodge Hall. Games, crafts and food will be provided for a fun evening for children of all ages. Contact Tara Wigle at 541-935-5245 or Mary Houle at 541-942-9341 for more information.

The Crow Annual Alumni Basketball tournament will take place on December 9 and 10.  This year, there will be a women’s team plus a dessert social and a silent auction.  Call Linda Lay for more information, 541-844-5830.

The Rural Art Center’s movie night at Lorane Grange is December 10 and will be showing the original version of the ever popular Christmas movie, “It’s a Wonderful Life.” Go to their website at http://www.ruralartcenter.org/movie-night for more information.

I, too, want to add my own personal condolences to the Gleason family who lost their father and grandfather, Jack Gleason, last month. Jack and Helen moved to Lorane in 1986 when Helen’s grandmother, “Grandma” Leona Williams, who had a home on Cottage Grove-Lorane Road, passed away. Their family has been a part of the Lorane community since then. Rest in Peace, Jack.

Also, while we were in Hawaii, I understand that Marjorie Parry suffered what seemed to be a stroke, although the diagnosis showed that it wasn’t. She is slowly recuperating in the hospital and has shown some improvement, but prayers and positive thoughts are being asked by the family for her complete recovery. The Wickwire and Parry families have ours. May Marge be back home soon.

Once again, thank you, Marissa, for the excellent job you did while we were away.
