I apologize for begging off from my column-writing duties last week. I had arthroscopic knee surgery scheduled for the day I usually try to turn in my columns and as I sat down the day before to get one out early, I was absolutely blank. I didn’t want to waste space talking about my surgeries or the weather and I had covered all of the upcoming events that I knew of, so Pam and Scott were kind enough to give me the week off.
As for my surgery, it went extremely well; I was off crutches and walking on my own at the end of the day following surgery and I have since (on Day 3 and Day 5) taken two 1-mile-long walks with our new little buddy, Toby. At one week since the surgery, I still have some swelling and the injection sites are still healing, but I’m good and no longer in pain.
So! That covers the surgery… and what can I say about the weather, but with the daffodils, crocuses and primroses blooming and a bit of sun peeking through the clouds quite often, how can we deny that spring is not on its way? Enjoy!
I have been asked to remind everyone about spreading the word on the upcoming “Crow Country 66” Reunion Dance featuring the music from the 1960s and 1970s that is being planned for Saturday, March 25 at 7:00 p.m. at the Crow Grange. There is no charge for this event and I don’t believe that you need to be a Crow alum to attend. Besides your dancing shoes, you are asked to bring a potluck dessert to share.
Another reminder… the Lorane Grange and Rural Art Center are joining forces once again this year to host the annual Lorane Talent Show. It’s a free event open to anyone, of any age, who wants to participate. Almost any kind of family-friendly talent is welcomed and encouraged. Maybe you are not a piano virtuoso, a Fred Astaire-type dancer or a Top-10 recording artist, but you have a special knack from your school days – however many years ago that may have been. What about doing a recitation, humorous skit, cheerleading or gymnastic moves, twirling a basketball on your index finger like a Globetrotter, telling jokes…? Or maybe you have a unique ability to do something amazing. If so, you are asked to sign up and share your talents with the community.
The show will be at the Lorane Grange on April 2, beginning at 3:00 p.m. You can sign-up in advance by emailing ruralartcenter@gmail.com or calling Lil Thompson at 541-952-5701. Come entertain everyone in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. I’m told that there is room for twenty 5-minute acts.
ATTENTION APPLEGATE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PARENTS: A discussion is currently taking place on the Crow Community Facebook page about an interest in establishing a PTA/PTO/PTC group at the Applegate Elementary School to represent the younger students. It has been suggested that instead of forming an entirely new non-profit group, that a committee, branching off of the current Crow Booster Club be set up for the purpose of fundraising and filling the elementary school needs and interests. Please be sure to join in on the discussion if you are interested in forming such a group.
The newly re-established Lorane Community Group will be meeting at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 11 at the Lorane Deli. They are seeking new members who want to help shape the way our community grows.
The group’s focus will be to create collaboration between the Grange, Rebekahs, Rural Art Center and Fire Department in order to build community. The plans are to set up separate committees that will key in on specific projects and meet separately. Projects being considered include a mural; “Welcome to Lorane” signs; an exercise group; disaster preparedness plan; community-wide yard sale event; Growers Market, Santa’s Helper project; and food box drives.
If you’re interested in any of these projects, please plan to attend the April 11 meeting.
