Sawyer Scott HaxbyBefore I get back to writing my column for Lorane, I want—need—to announce the arrival of Jim’s and my newest great-grandbaby. Our granddaughter, Linsey Kau Haxby and her husband Brent announce the birth of Sawyer Scott Haxby who was born on October 2, at 8:04 p.m., weighing 7lbs 4oz. and 21 3/4 inches long. Of course, he’s perfect! Sawyer is an anomaly in our family—he’s male. We have populated our family with a large number of strong, beautiful, bright and caring fe43229079_10217015817370574_8404397867443159040_nmales through three generations now, but the males of the family, while equally strong, bright, handsome and caring, are a rarity. We’ve averaged one for each of the three generations that Jim and I spawned. Sawyer is the first of his generation, joining our son Rob Edwards and grandson Kevin Stevens, and it will be interesting to see if others will follow. He has a little cousin on the way, due in early December. Whatever the gender, she or he will be cherished.

Now, I suppose I’d really better get everyone caught up on the upcoming events scheduled this month in Lorane and Crow…

Saturday, October 13, begins the first Lorane Movie Night showing of the 2018/2019 season. The featured movie is “Bend It Like Beckham” (2002). It’s described as a romantic comedy where “the daughter of orthodox Sikhs rebels against her parents’ traditionalism and joins a football team.“

Each monthly movie night begins at 6:00 p.m. at the Lorane Grange with a homemade soup and salad dinner, followed by fun and games at 6:45 p.m. before the movie begins at 7:30. A suggested donation is $7 for adults and $5 for children, 12 and under.

A reminder: The Crow community is holding a fundraiser for Crow High School graduate, Cody Tripp, who is taking on his second battle with cancer. A dinner is being held on Saturday, October 27, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., at the Crow Grange. Check the Lorane and Crow Community Facebook pages for more details.

The Lorane dinner and bingo night sponsored by the Lorane Grange will begin its fall season on Friday, October 19. I believe that the dinner will begin at 5:30 p.m. and bingo will get started at 6:30.

2018 Groundwater Anthology FRONT COVERWe’ve just completed the 2018 Groundwaters anthology. We are doing the last proofing at this time and hope to publish it by early next week. We will once again launch it at a special program called Groundwaters LIVE! to be held on Sunday, October 21 , tentatively at 3:00 p.m., at the Applegate Regional Theater on the corner of Central and Fleck Roads, north of Crow. Ten of our 70+ contributing authors will give 5-minute readings from their works. Refreshments will be served and anthologies from all four years will be available for purchase.

We wish to invite the community to join us. This year, we are including some of the poems featured in the first issues of the Groundwaters magazine begun by Judy Hays-Eberts in October 2004. They will include poems written by current and past West Lane residents Sally Spaulding, Pat Gill, Judy Hays-Eberts, Guy Lundy, Terry Brooke, Carolyn Carney and the late Janet Romanek, Reneé Dodds, June Wyant, and Paul Cass. Selections have also been chosen by Jessie Stinson and Jean-Marie Purcell, as well.

We have quite a few new contributors for 2018, too. I have no doubt that you’ll be quite impressed by the quality of talent demonstrated by local authors and poets who share their work with us each year.

Now that school has started and everyone is looking towards fall, community activities are starting up again.

This month, the Crow Grange will resume its monthly bingo and dinner event that helps to provide funding to maintain their building and grounds. It’s a fun evening that the whole family can participate in. It sponsors two dinner and bingo nights a month—on the first and third Saturdays. They break for the winter holidays and summer vacation, so their first dinner and bingo evening will be on Saturday, September 15. Dinner is served beginning at 6:00 p.m. and bingo starts at 7:00 p.m. Everyone is invited to join them for the food, fun and games.

The Lorane Grange will be getting back into its own dinner and bingo schedule beginning in October. I’ll let you know the exact date closer to the time.

The Lorane Christian Church is sponsoring a class called “Financial Peace” starting September 18th. This is a 9-week course on how to get out of debt, budget your money and build wealth. It will be held at the Lorane Grange on Tuesday nights from 7:00-8:30 p.m. You must register on-line at FINANCIAL PEACE REGISTRATION. The cost for the class is $109, but if you need financial assistance, the church can help with part of that. Contact Heidi Rusten Langstraat on the website for questions or info.

The Lorane Rural Art Center has released its line-up of movies to be shown for this upcoming season. They are seeking sponsors to provide homemade soup—3 gallons of meat-based soup and/or 3 gallons of vegetarian—at each of the scheduled movie nights.

The movies include:

  • October 13: “Bend It Like Beckham”
  • November 10: “Hidden Figures”
  • December 8: “The Book Thief”
  • January 12: “East Side Sushi”
  • February 9: “Far From the Madding Crowd”
  • March 9: “Beasts of the Southern Wild (?)” (This last one has not been locked in yet and it may change.)

As reported in an earlier column, former Crow graduate, Chad Alden Andrews, passed away on August 19. His mother, Robin Rene (O’Brien), sent this update that I’d like to share.

I got a letter yesterday from the Life Center Organ Donor Network in Cincinnati… they are the family liaison for organ donors. They told me that all the transplants donated by Chad were successful and the hospital is flying a flag out front with Chad’s name on it. They also sent me a small flag and 100 “Donate Life” wristbands which I will put out to share at his memorial.

Note: The date of the memorial celebration will be announced when it has been determined.

We’re sending prayers and our thanks to all of the fire fighters who have been working so many hours, days and weeks to try to control the many wildfires in the area. We especially thank those who worked so hard to contain the fires that broke out near Curtin, along I-5 that could have easily headed our way.

It’s so sad to witness the destruction of so many trees, wildlife and even, in certain areas, homes, property and human life. It’s pretty scary. Thank you to those of you who are willing to put your lives on the line. Your efforts have not been overlooked!

Spring is definitely in the air. I’ve been feeling it for a long time, but haven’t been able to enjoy it. I caught a nasty virus after our trip to California and it’s taken me over two weeks to even come out of the fog of sinus headaches, constantly dripping nose and cough spasms. My doctor gave me a prescription for antibiotics but told me not to fill it for several days… about halfway into my second week. I can understand the hesitancy with not wanting to use antibiotics unless we absolutely have to, but the fact that we must wait two weeks to get better on our own is a bit daunting.

Anyway, I’ve emerged from the fog finally and have been rebuilding my energy level. I even painted our guest bathroom yesterday. Jim tried mowing the lawn, but it was still a bit too wet, leaving large wet clumps of grass trailing the lawnmower. Soon it will need to be done every few days! I’m ready!

The Lorane Church ladies are holding a bake sale at the Lorane Family Store on Saturday, March 24, beginning at 10:00 a.m. As we have all learned, plan to get there early to have a good selection of all of the yummy cookies, brownies and other sweets that are offered.

Later that evening, the Lorane Grange will have another delicious spaghetti dinner and bingo night starting at 5:30 p.m. The progressive blackout amount continues to grow and is very “winnable,” so be sure to come and enjoy all of the fun and hi-jinx, not to mention the good food.

On Sunday, March 25 at 10:00 a.m., the Lorane Christian Church, will present a moving, inspirational opportunity to experience “The Last Supper” to commemorate Easter by bringing the major biblical event to life. Everyone is invited to take part.

The Lorane talent show will be happening on Sunday, April 8, a week after April Fools Day this year. Actually it would have been a perfect time to schedule it on April 1st. The show runs from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m and it’s free! This fun event is sponsored jointly each year by the Lorane Grange and the Rural Art Center. The organizers try to fit 20 five-minute acts into the program in an hour’s time, so if you’re interested in taking part, figure out what you’d like to share with everyone and sign up for a spot. According to Lisa Livelybrooks, “We have had chicken roping, a professional show tune performance, a clarinet solo, a tap dance, and a burped ABC song.” So build up your courage and get in on the fun. And… if you’re too chicken or totally lacking in the talent department, mark it on your calendars so you can enjoy watching everyone else perform.
