Greetings from Lorane!

I just heard that long-time resident, Pat Elliott, of the Fawn Creek area of Siuslaw River Road west of Lorane suffered a stroke caused by a brain bleed on February 12. The condition caused a seizure and surgery was performed to correct the bleed. He’s been in rehab for the past 3 weeks and will begin receiving regular therapy at home. According to Linda and Bridgett Johnson-Elliott, “We’re now faced with enormous medical bills and monthly expenses which Pat’s Medicare covers only a portion of.” The Johnson-Elliott family has set up an on-line account at https://www.youcaring.com/pat-elliott-536507 to accept financial help for Pat’s medical expenses. Get well soon, Pat. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Last week I reported on the hospitalization of a Creswell High School sophomore, Blake Nelson, who has been battling a flesh-eating bacteria throughout much of his body. His situation has touched the hearts of many who don’t even know him. Prayers and donations from generous people have been sent and a GoFundMe account that his wrestling coach set up for him has reached over $18,000 as of this writing. In addition, his coach and parents have been posting updates on Blake’s condition. The following from his parents, Pete and Michelle Nelson, is the latest one…

“Blake is finally doing consistently better! He seems to have turned the corner and is past the worst of this nastiness. The doctors think they have all the infection sites under control and have started the process of sealing the biggest wounds back up. He had his 7th surgery last Thursday to continue that process. He has another surgery scheduled for Saturday and they are optimistic that they will be able to close both of his big wounds and he will not need any skin grafts. Hopefully that will be his last surgery…” For the full update, go to https://www.gofundme.com/6gs9rbpg

The Lorane Grange’s Dinner and Bingo Night is scheduled for Saturday, March 19, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Come join us for a fun evening!

The Applegate Elementary will soon be hosting an “Artist in Residency” program featuring professional artists at their schools. This spring’s schedule will begin with Terri Robertson who will conduct a class on cartooning.  The next theme will be on Japanese-American art and culture in all forms.  This particular program is another one sponsored by the local Rural Art Center. We are so lucky to have them in our community! Thank you, RAC!

The schools in the Crow-Applegate-Lorane School District are participating in Open Enrollment during the month of March. Please encourage anyone seeking a small rural school with great teachers, smaller classes and an amazing and caring staff to contact the district office at 541-935-2100.

The Lorane Fitness Group reminds everyone that they are meeting regularly at the Lorane Grange on Tuesdays at 7:00 p.m. for dance and aerobics and on Thursdays at 5:00 p.m. for yoga, pilates and Tai Chi.

I’ve been told that the newly-reopened Lorane Deli is getting a partial face-lift. It’s good to see it open again!

The Rural Art Center’s Lorane Movie Night finished its season last Saturday night. It will resume in October.

Wow! Tax season and grass season are really upon us. Hopefully, I can get the taxes wrapped up this week, but now that I think I’ve finally kicked the “cold virus-that-keeps-returning,” I’d better take advantage of one of these dryer days to get my lawns mowed. The grass has really started to grow, but I’m not complaining – I think that spring is really on the way!

Our most exciting news in Lorane this week is the re-opening of the Lorane Deli. It is once again providing breakfast and lunch and a place to meet with friends and neighbors over a cup of coffee. Local residents, Peggy and Jesse Tindall, will open at 6:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. five days a week, probably closing on Sundays and Mondays to begin with. The announcement on the Lorane Facebook page brought many cheers and good wishes this past week. Margie McNutt offered the first testimonial to the re-opening: “Just had lunch there with Jenny and Marissa and our two littlest grandbabies. It was great to see it open again! Good food too!”

I hope that everyone will come out to support it. It’s been sorely missed by many.

Last week, the Crow High School Junior Class had a fundraiser at Papa’s Pizza for its upcoming Prom Night. If you weren’t able to make it to Papa’s last Wednesday, I’m sure that they’d welcome a cash donation. That’s what Jim and I will do as I’ve been dealing with a sinus infection and cold and we weren’t able to make it out for pizza.

We received the news this week that former long-time Lorane resident, LaVerne Brissler, passed away recently. She and her husband Elmer lived on Fire Road for many years. Our condolences to the Brissler family.

The Lorane Rebekah’s are still collecting cans and bottles and have a metal recycle bin at the lodge hall for collection of your scrap metal. They are fundraising to supplement the grants they recently received in order to complete the planned upgrade to the old Lodge building. According to Sande Maxwell (541-942-5083), “We really appreciate your support.”

The Lorane Grange is collecting pop and beer can tabs to contribute to a drive to provide funding for much-needed dialysis to patients throughout the state. Either call a grange member or drop them off on the front porch of the Grange. You can also drop them off at the Lorane Family Store if you prefer.

The Crow-Applegate-Lorane School Board will be meeting at Crow this month instead of Lorane due to a conflict at the Lorane Grange. The meeting will be on Thursday, January 21 at Applegate Elementary at 7:00 p.m. following an executive session. The February meeting will be moved to the Lorane Grange.

Mark your calendars in advance… It may seem early, but the Rural Art Center and the Lorane Grange want to remind everyone to begin thinking about participating in the annual Talent Show at the Grange. It is usually held the first Sunday in April, although a definite date has not yet been announced. They’re hoping to book some of our amazing local talent early. Polish up your tap shoes and get your comedy routine worked out. If you’ve got a talent for anything, amazing or bizarre, they want to recruit you!

A reminder of the next Grange Spaghetti Dinner and Bingo night: Saturday, January 23, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Bring the whole family!

Whew! I hope that all of you were able to get out of the heat this past week, or at least spend the hottest part of the day in or on the water of our nearby reservoirs, lakes, rivers and streams.

Lorane Deli aka Lorane General Store

While the Lorane Deli is closed, the Lorane Rebekah’s have come up with a plan to provide a space for the very popular “coffee klatch” that has formed over the years at the deli. Every Wednesday from 7:00 to 9:00 a.m., the Rebekahs will provide coffee, pastries and rolls for $1 each for those who want to continue their social gatherings. Sounds like a great way to continue what has become an informal tradition. Be sure to tell your neighbors about it.

The Lorane Christian Church will be holding their “Worship in the Park” again this year on July 12 at Farmin Creek located just north of the entrance to Chateau Lorane on Siuslaw River Road. The church service will be held at 10:30 a.m. and

Lorane Christian Church

immediately following will be a community potluck lunch. The public is invited!

Has anyone noticed the bright purple field of lavender at King Estate recently? I don’t know if the way the light was hitting it the other day when I went by made the colors more vibrant, but it was a beautiful sight up on the hill in front of the winery.

I hope that all of you have marked Saturday, September 12, on your calendars. It’s proving to be a busy one for both Lorane and Crow. The Lorane Celebration will be hosting not only a community-wide yard/garage sale, but also a number of fun activities and events. Being discussed are: lunch, sale booths, arts & crafts and quilt show, and a small farmer’s market at the Grange; a bake sale and outdoor movies after dark at the Rebekahs; a barbecue at the church as well as kids’ games and activities including a dunk tank, bounce house and carnival booths. Another possibility that has not been finalized yet is a neighborhood walk for those who want to get out and socialize while exercising.

The popular 13th Annual Crow Car Show has also been set for Saturday, September 12, in the small athletic field across from the Applegate School in Crow. There are 12 show classes. Plan to get there early for a pancake breakfast from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. There will also be a children’s area, a silent auction and raffle drawings. It’s sponsored by the Crow Booster Club and all proceeds will benefit all of the Crow-Applegate-Lorane schools. It’s open to the public and there’s no admission.

Because of the nature of the work I do, I want to give recognition to our local writers whenever possible. I just discovered that retired teacher and Veneta resident, Michael Foster, published a book last November called Wakanisha: Is Love Enough. It’s the first book in a projected series and is about the Lakota Sioux tribe. The Lakota word “Wakanisha” roughly translates as “children,” but has a far deeper meaning. Wakanisha are their sacred vessels of culture, spirituality and most importantly, love. These first inhabitants of America strove for harmony in all things – with the land of rolling plains they freely roamed, and within their tribes, families and hearts. The book follows three generations of these remarkable people and its description sounds most interesting. The book can be found on Amazon.com and other on-line booksellers. Let’s support our talented local authors! We have a number of them!

Happy summer, all!
