It sounds as though the Lorane Fitness group is off and running. According to Pam Kersgaard, one of the organizers, “Our set schedule is dance/aerobic workouts on Tuesdays at 7:00 p.m. On Thursdays at 5:00 p.m., we will do yoga/pilates/Tai Chi. So far we are showing videos on the big screen. It’s perfect for beginners. We have averaged around 14 or 15 people attending!”

They are providing babysitting in a separate room for those with young ones. There has been some interest shown in a morning session, but so far, none have been organized. Check the notices on either the “Health and Fitness in Lorane” or the “Lorane, Oregon” Facebook pages for updates.

My offer of putting together a directory of Lorane businesses, services and products is still open but someone needs to collect information for me if it is to be done. Katarina Digman has been the only one to offer a couple of suggestions, but I’ll need at least one person to coordinate and gather all of the information needed as I won’t be able to take on another project at this time. I’d be glad to put it on my allthingslorane.com website or in some simple printed pamphlets.

Congratulations are in store for Teke Jentzsch of Crow High School who placed second in his weight division in the District Wrestling Meet hosted by Crow. He qualified for the State meet which, as you read this, was held this past weekend. At this writing on the first day of the tournament, however, Teke’s mother, Coleen Jentzsch reports that, “Teke lost his first match, 11 to 10, in the last few seconds in the 3rd round. Tough match. He won the second one in true Teancum style. He pinned him in the 2nd round! So proud of my boy!” If Teke can win his next two matches on Saturday, he will place 3rd in state. Good job, Teke!

I understand that  Dakoata Lutje from Crow earned his way to the state tournament, too. He was eliminated early but according to his mom, Keri Boehringer-Lutje, “Dakoata fought hard and was up 5-2. He almost had a pin several times, but  lost with 34 seconds remaining. Tough loss, being up the whole time, but so proud of Dakoata. He had a great season. Way to come back with a broken thumb and still be at State!” Congratulations, Dakoata!

Sorry, Tom Page… I didn’t mean to step over into your territory, but I’ve known the Jentzsch and Boehringer families for a looong time! I’ll let you give the official “scoop.”

Speaking of Crow sports, I just heard that our grandson, Kevin Stevens, will be helping to coach the Crow baseball team this year. Boy, does that ever take me back. Kev graduated from Crow in 2006 (has it really been 10 years?). I loved those late spring/early summer evenings when we sat in the bleachers and watched his baseball team play nine innings. I still get goosebumps when I hear the solid crack of a bat connecting with a ball. It stirs up memories of how those cracks of the bat frequently sent a ball over the outfield fence and into the pond. We had quite a collection of those signed and dated balls on display in our house until I gave them back to Kev when he got his own home. Such sweet memories!

Last week, we were told that long-time teacher at Crow, Norm Fox, was hospitalized with what was determined to be a heart attack. He has been slowly recovering, but has been on a respirator and heavily sedated. He is still in the hospital and for those who know Norm and want to keep updated on his progress, his daughter, Cindee, has set up a Facebook page specifically for that purpose called, “Praying for Norm Fox.” Our thoughts and prayers are with the Fox family.

The Lorane Christian Church will provide a very “inspiring, emotional and live “Last Supper” service on Sunday, March 6 at 11:00 a.m.

The next half day of art, sponsored by the Rural Art Center, is scheduled for Friday, March 4. Marti Byers, former Crow High School drama teacher, who is  now affiliated with the Applegate Regional Theater, Inc. (ART, Inc) will be working with the students on drama, improvisation games and skits. Scholarships are available for the participating fee. Contact Alyssa Shepherd at 541-556-8151 or malyssa2@yahoo for more information.

I understand that congratulations are in order for the members of ART, Inc. who recently were able to purchase the former Central School property and can now move forward with their plans for the long-dreamed-of theater that they have been planning. Congratulations to Marti Byers (who happens also to be Jennifer Chambers’ mother), Vicki Sourdry, and all of the loyal members of the ART, Inc. team who have worked so hard to make this happen! It’s a win-win for not only ART, but for the Veneta/Crow communities, as well.

Yuck! Three weeks ago I came down with a cold, and I’ve still got it! It’s like a group of waves that roll in on the beach. When it first hit, the symptoms began to ebb after a few days and then, Wham! I was hit with a few more waves carrying with them an assortment of coughs, sneezes, eternal congestion and now eye infection. Yesterday, I finally broke down and visited the Cottage Grove Walk-In Clinic since my doctor was booked up and they put me on some antibiotics and an inhaler. I’m feeling better today, but I’m holding my breath that there’s not another breaker heading my way. The nurse at the clinic told me that I was not alone… that record numbers of people were experiencing the same type of long, drawn-out upper respiratory infection this winter.

With all of my whining out of the way, I am hanging my head in shame because I’m truly one of the lucky ones. I am blessed with much better health than many others. How can I complain when such beautiful people around me have so much more to deal with, health-wise, than me?

Today, we got word from former Loranian, Stan Davis, that his wife – our wonderful, beautiful, beloved Debbie Davis – is having to undergo a second craniotomy to remove a brain tumor. Stan’s message, while extremely sobering, carried a signature bit of humor passed on from Debbie, herself. In his message, he said, “…It is in the speech center, and she is wondering if I would, maybe, prefer a mute wife?? Hmmm…” The tone is typical Debbie who has always brought sunshine into all of our lives. Our love and prayers are with you both, Debbie and Stan! I’m sure they’d love to have some others sent their way, too.
The Crow-Applegate-Lorane School Board is still looking for members for the district’s budget committee. The committee met for the first time last Thursday, February 4, but there will be two more meetings. If you are interested in serving the school district in this way, please call the district office for further information (541-935-2100).

The Crow Middle/High School students who want to play a spring sport (baseball, softball or track) is required to attend the upcoming Spring Sports Sign-Up and Parent Meeting at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 16 at the high school. Parents will need to attend with the students.

Don’t forget the Friendship Dinner hosted by Lorane Christian Church at Sizzlers on Gateway Blvd. in Springfield on Sunday, February 21 at 5:30 p.m.

Also, mark your calendars for the next Lorane Grange Dinner and Bingo Night which will be held on Saturday, February 27. They are going to try something besides spaghetti this time – possibly an assortment of finger foods as well as those yummy desserts. The blackout bingo pot is up to over $300. Bring the whole family. It’s so much fun.

A Bit of Lorane History (honoring Stan Davis’ family):

In the early 1900s, Frank Davis lived on his homestead, due west of the former Delwin Doughty homeplace. The farm buildings were situated on top of a hill with the barn perched right at the edge of a canyon. One evening about dusk, Chancy, who lived on north Territorial Road where the former Cliff Stevens’ place is located, heard the sound of distant yelling coming from the direction of his brother’s homestead, some two miles away. Because Frank’s wife Elma was due to have a baby at any time, Chancy feared that she might be having complications. He hurriedly saddled a horse and galloped full speed in the direction of his brother’s homestead. Every few minutes he heard a loud yell. Upon arriving, he leaped from his horse, just as another full-throated “holler” rent the air in the direction of the barn. As he ran towards the barn, he was met with the sight of Frank Davis standing next to his barn with his back to the canyon. He was bent at the waist with his head tucked between his knees yelling into the canyon beyond – listening to his own echo. (From Sawdust and Cider; 1987; 2006)

Whew! We’ve rounded the corner on winter and are heading towards a much-looked-forward-to spring. Sadly, for me, the holidays seem to be more stressful each year. I love being with our family to celebrate all that we share, but the preparations and busy-ness tend to wear down my reserves of energy. The rest of my year is spent with normally quiet days at home with the dogs and cats as my companions and the afternoons and evenings reserved especially for Jim.

Oh, this past year was more active than usual with the number of presentations that Jo and I were asked to give, culminating with the Holiday Market booth to sell our books, but my comfort zone is at home where I spend the mornings working on book projects and, when the weather is nice, spending some time outside. I acknowledge that I’ve become somewhat of a recluse.

It didn’t help, either, that I had a bout of stomach virus before Christmas and a sinus infection and respiratory congestion this past week. They seem to have gone through about 90% of our whole extended family… sometimes more than once. We jokingly place the blame on our designated little “Typhoid Mary” who seemed to be the center of both maladies in not only our family, but the in-laws, too.

So, in the next month or two, I’ll be looking for some sunny breaks in the weather and gentle showers instead of downpours to indicate that spring is on its way. Turning that corner into a new year always brings a renewal of optimism and a reawakening of life’s promises as it always seems to.

The Lorane Christian Church is hosting a special 6-week taped study with popular nationally-recognized Pastor Rick Warren called “Purpose-Given Life” from his “Daily Hope” series. Those interested in participating will watch video presentations each week that are supplemented with a textbook and workbook. It’s described as a study in “What Am I Here For?” They are being held each Thursday at 6:30 p.m. The first introductory session was held last Thursday and the next class will be on January 28, so new participants are welcome and encouraged to get on board right away. There is a $7 charge for the workbook.

Lloyd and Jeri Porter have asked me to express their appreciation for all of the community support that has been given to them during Lloyd’s recovery from a major stroke last year. Jeri stressed that Lloyd’s motor skills have returned and he is no longer having physical therapy; he is also making progress with the remaining after-effects. They feel that they live in the most caring community possible and send their thanks to everyone who has helped them over the obstacles they’ve faced.

A group of local people are interested in putting together a resource directory of people with Lorane businesses, services and special skills. I have offered to host the directory on my personal website (http://allthingslorane.com) and put together a printed version when it’s complete. For those interested in being included, please send me your contact information and a description of your business, service or skill. Anyone else wanting to help can gather the information and send it to me at paedwards42@yahoo.com or send me a Facebook message. The information can also be left at the Lorane Family Store. If you nominate someone for inclusion, however, be sure that they have given their permission.

The Lorane Christian Church will also be hosting its annual Friendship Dinner at Sizzlers on Gateway Blvd. in Springfield on Sunday, February 21. Be sure to mark your calendars.

Also, the next Lorane Grange Spaghetti Dinner and Bingo Night will be held on Saturday, February 27.

The sun’s peeking out behind a cloud right now, so the dogs and I are going to head out for a walk… Talk to you next week!
