Aloha! As you’re reading this, Jim and I and 15 members of our family are in Hawaii. Most of us will be cruising the islands, but since our newest great-granddaughter, Hayden, is too young to join us on the ship, the Furlong branch of our family will be exploring Kauai until our ship docks there on our last two nights of the cruise. Our whole immediate family, except for our youngest daughter Kelly, who was not able to join us, will spend Thanksgiving Day together at a luau. Talk about blessings! We’ll have plenty to be thankful for this year.

While I’m gone, long time Lorane resident, Marissa McNutt-Cooper, will be providing you with the community news. Thank you, Marissa! With your help and our special friends and neighbors making sure that our house and store are taken care of while we are gone, we plan to have some fun and relax in the sunshine. I’ll give you an update when we return. ~ Pat Edwards

From Marissa McNutt Cooper:

Hey all! As Pat said, I am going to be filling in for her while her family is away on vacation. I will be honest, I have never written a newspaper column before, but I will try my very best to get you all the Sweet Lorane Community News for the next few weeks. That being said, let’s get to it…

I want to start first by saying a huge THANK YOU to all who live in the Crow-Applegate-Lorane School District that voted to pass the 20-264 Bond Measure for Safety and Facility upgrades for the elementary and high school campuses! Our District is in dire need of facility improvements and thanks to the voters in our district, that can now happen! As a parent of a first grader at Applegate Elementary, I want to personally say thank you and I am looking forward to seeing the district’s plans for the schools come to fruition.

The whole community of Lorane would like to express our deepest condolences to the family of long-time Lorane resident Jack Gleason, who passed away Monday, November 14th. We are so very sorry for your loss and your family is in all of our thoughts. I have not received information about his service, though I will make sure to include any information I get into next week’s column.

It is that time of year again, we are getting ready for our annual Angel Trees. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the trees, they are Christmas trees located at the Lorane Family Store and Crow High School gymnasium with felt angel ornaments that have a suggestion of a gift for a child in our community whose family is in need of assistance this holiday season. The Angel trees are for any family in need of assistance with children age birth to 18 who live in Lorane or Crow or attend a C-A-L school. Children do not have to be of school age or attend Crow-Applegate-Lorane, just live in our community and or attend school here. How you can help is by picking an Angel ornament off the tree, purchasing a new gift, then returning it unwrapped with the Angel ornament to the tree in Lorane or to the Crow High School office.

The holiday helper forms recently went out with the Weekly Buzz to all children attending C-A-L schools, so be on the lookout for them in your children’s backpacks. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance this year, please return the form to the school’s office if your children attend C-A-L or contact me, Marissa at 541-517-6608. Please know that all information received is completely confidential and that the angels on the trees do not include names.

Here are some upcoming dates to mark on your calendars:

Parents night out, hosted by the Lorane Theta Rho #94 will be December 9 from 4:30-10:00 p.m at the Lorane Rebekah Hall. They will be providing free childcare so that you can go Christmas shopping, have a night out or a quiet evening at home. Please contact Tara Wiggle at 541-935-5245 with any questions.

The Crow Booster Club will be holding their annual alumni basketball tournament December 9 and 10. If you or someone you know is interested in playing, please contact Booster Club President Linda Lay at 541-844-5840

The Lorane Grange Christmas Dinner will be held on December 11 at 1:30 p.m. The Grange will provide the turkey, dressing, ham, potatoes and drinks. Please feel free to bring a dessert or side dish.

The Lorane Food bank will be accepting non-perishable donations for the holiday food baskets until December 15. If you or someone you know that lives in our community is in need of food assistance, please contact Sande Maxwell at 541-942-5083

I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Things are pretty quiet in Lorane these days as far as news is concerned. The Lorane Growers’ Market continues to be busy. Jim brought home some luscious prunes that were left last week. He only brought me about a dozen to eat – which I did in short order – but he said there was a whole large box of them and they went fast once people discovered them. Pears were also brought in and lots of apples, squash and other produce. I need to get some of my ripe tomatoes down there, too. I don’t have a large garden… just a few tomato plants, one zucchini and one crookneck squash plant… but they are keeping us in fresh produce. Even our dog, Outlaw, is benefiting. I’m trying to get him to lose the weight… or at least not gain any more since he went on phenobarbital for seizures. The medication tends to increase appetite. I dice the large zucchini and cook and store it in the refrigerator to supplement his dry dog food. I was told to do this with canned green beans, but he likes the zucchini much better and gobbles it right down along with his pill. My plant production is slowing down, so I may have to begin checking out the growers’ market for oversize zucchini. That’s a first!

Speaking of zucchini… since I don’t have much community news to report… I’d like to thank Veneta resident, Karen Vosika, for sharing this great recipe with Groundwaters many years ago. It’s always a big hit with Jim and me this time of year when my mini-garden is producing. It’s called “Victory Garden Skillet” and best of all, it’s easy. Ingredients: 1 lb. hamburger; about 2 or 3 cups of diced zucchini, 1 cup of uncooked rice; 1 large diced onion; 1 or 2 sliced tomatoes; 3 beef bouillon cubes; ½ tsp dry mustard; 2½ cups water; 6 slices of cheddar cheese; salt and pepper to taste.

Brown the hamburger in large skillet; add rice, onion, zucchini, bouillon cubes, dry mustard and water. Boil, stir and simmer for 20 minutes. Stir in or layer on top (I prefer to layer) the cheese and tomato. Let stand for 5 to 10 minutes so the cheese will melt over the top. Delicious!

I just completed the layout for a new book that Groundwaters was asked to publish by author, Joe Blakely. It will be of interest to not only local baseball fans and history buffs, but to our own community because it is about Lorane’s neighbor to the southwest, Drain, Oregon. It’s called The Drain Black Sox of Oregon vs The Alpine Cowboys of Texas; The Glory Days of Semi-Pro Baseball: 1930-1960 by Joe Blakely. It’s a great book that contains a lot of names of those who played for the Drain Black Sox that most sports fans will recognize. The book recounts in detail the 1958 National Semi-Pro Championship game between these two teams.  “Who’da thunk” that such a small community could field a championship team?

We published the book this past week and more information on it can be found on the Groundwaters website at http://www.groundwaterspublishing.com/Bookstore.html.

School for the C-A-L School District starts on Tuesday, September 6… the day after Labor Day. Enjoy the rest of your summer!

Oh! How I love this time of the year. I hope that each of you is enjoying the sunshine and even the light, scattered showers to help with the watering duties as much I as I am.

Recent discussion on the Lorane Facebook page indicates that there are a couple of orphaned cougars that are attacking small livestock in the area. Some goats have been killed and the half-grown cats were seen bothering some horses, too. Apparently the horses are ok, thank goodness. One Lorane resident feared that dogs had killed two of his 65 pound lambs, but the consensus is that they were probably victims of the cougars, as well. Living where we do, it’s necessary to keep small animals securely housed at night, especially now when there is a definite problem.

The Crow-Applegate-Lorane School District will be hosting a fun event on Friday, June 3. At 6:00 p.m., it will feature the opening of a 50-year old time capsule that was buried beside the flag pole at Crow High School on December 26, 1967. The event will take place on the front lawn of the high school. Hotdogs will be cooking on the Cougar grill and available for all participants who come to witness the opening of the time capsule. Members of the class of 1967-68 are especially encouraged to attend the event as are all CHS alumni.

Once opened and the contents removed, the time capsule will be filled with new mementos of our time period and buried so that it can be reopened again in 50 more years. They are hoping for a big turnout to celebrate the past 50 years, so please pass the word to others who might like to witness a bit of Crow history.

The Crow-Applegate-Lorane district office asked me also to let Lorane parents know that the high school’s 541-686-5024 number is not currently working. Until it has been fixed, you can reach them by calling their 541-935-2100 or the high school’s 541-935-2227 numbers, but long distance rates will apply if you are calling from a 942 number on a land-line that charges for long distance. It should not affect cell phone users whose long distance is covered, however..

A local Lorane resident is advertising for someone locally who can provide caregiver services for her 92-year-old mother. They need to line up at least two who can work the different shifts. Only non-smokers will be considered and they must be able to lift and pivot the woman to\from her chair to a commode when necessary. It pays $11.00 per hour and the shifts they need someone for are 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays and from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. For more information, please call 541-942-1566 and leave a detailed message with name, phone number, and hours interested.

Someone else is seeking a ranch hand. Check out the Lorane, Oregon Facebook page for more info.

Jo-Brew and I spent a very enjoyable morning in Portland last Wednesday. We were invited to give a talk to the “Seasoned Adult Enrichment Program” at Clackamas Community College about the history of Pacific Highway/U.S. Highway 99 through Oregon. There were about 30 people in attendance for the 2-hour talk and they made us feel very welcome. The talk went well, we sold several books and made some new friends. All-in-all, it was a fun day!

I hope that we continue to bask in this gorgeous sunshine without hot, hot temperatures for awhile. Enjoy!
