Sunshine! Need I say more? Well, maybe… planting flowers, taking walks, driving with the windows down, wearing short sleeves and sandals and, now that Jim has put new blades on the lawnmower, moving lawns… my wintertime blues have vanished!

Speaking of lawnmowers, the Lorane Grange has scheduled a cleanup of the Grange Cemetery on Monday, May 15 beginning at 9:00 a.m. Anyone who wants to help will be welcomed. Bring your weedeaters, gloves, rakes and clippers and be prepared to use them as much as possible. There will be a couple of lawnmowers volunteered, but I don’t imagine they’ll turn anyone away who wants to bring theirs, too. Many hands make light work, as Grandpa used to say. It still rings true today.

If you miss the Grange Cemetery cleanup, you can still get in on the action. The I.O.O.F. Cemetery cleanup is scheduled for Saturday, May 20. It will begin at about 9:00 a.m. for some, and others will arrive at 11:00 a.m. after Rebekah members have done their roadside cleanup chores.

That’s the same day when the Lorane Community-Wide Yard Sale will take place. For that event, the Grange will have tables set up with garage sale items and individuals will be holding their own sales around the Lorane area between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Maps of participating locations will be available at the Lorane Family Store, the Grange and the Lorane Deli. In addition, the Lorane Christian Church will be holding a bake sale that day in front of the church. Tables are still available to rent at the Grange for $10. Call Jeri Porter at 541-942-2448 if you are interested in renting one.

On Sunday, May 14, the Crow Grange will be having its annual Mother’s Day breakfast from 8:00 to 11:00 a.m. Breakfast will include pancakes or biscuits and gravy,  sausage, eggs, juice and coffee for a $5 suggested donation. You can’t beat that and you don’t have to fight Eugene traffic! My kids took me there a couple of years ago and it was a special treat. It’s so hard to get everyone together in once place these days… after all, we have so many mothers, including in-laws, in the family now. I’m not the only one. They need to be celebrated, too. This is a perfect way to say, “I love you, Mom!”

Don’t forget the Spring Arts Festival being held in the Crow High School gym on May 16 at 5:30 p.m. You will entertained by the Crow Middle/High School drama club, band and choir.  Art, made by the students, will be on display and for sale. Tickets to the event are $5 per person. For further information, contact Linda Lay, President of the Crow Booster Club, at 541-844-5850. All proceeds earned will benefit K-12 students throughout the district.

Happy May, everyone!

The Lorane Community Association is rekindling after a hiatus of a year or more. As I write this, a meeting has been scheduled for this weekend to elect officers and begin planning for future community service projects. Some possible projects that have been suggested are: organizing a welcoming committee for new residents; creating local neighborhood committees for disaster preparedness and/or Neighborhood Watch; providing Wii Games at the Lorane Grange for fun and recreation; hosting “Yard Sale Poker” events; planning and developing an area map or mural incorporating the early settlement of the area and its Native footpath; hosting yoga sessions and coffee socials. On-going projects established by the previous group will continue. These include the Lorane Growers’ Market, the free little library at the Lorane Family Store, the Holiday Angel Tree project and the upkeep of the Lorane Reader Board. These have all been successful for the past several years.

I’m sure that there are other ideas that will spring from the renewed interest in the group. Some will build interest and become reality; others will likely fade away, but the important thing is for community members to have common interests and goals to enrich our community. Working together is the best way of getting things done and I hope that there’s a large turnout at the meeting scheduled for Saturday, February 18. It will have already happened by the time you read this, but that doesn’t mean that if you weren’t able to attend, you’ve missed the boat. I’ll try to post future meeting notices so that membership can continue to grow. These same notices will also be posted on the Lorane, Oregon Facebook page and most likely the bulletin board. So, watch for them and consider donating some of your time and resources to working with your neighbors to make a difference in Lorane.

Mark your calendars for Saturday, February 25. It will be time for the Lorane Grange’s Spaghetti Dinner and Family Bingo Night again. For those of you who haven’t yet gotten the information memorized, dinner of spaghetti, caesar salad, garlic bread, drinks and dessert begins at 5:30 p.m. Bingo for the whole family starts at 6:30 p.m. It’s a fun evening that no one takes very seriously and for those who think that bingo is boring, you haven’t tried it at the Lorane Grange. Come out and join us.

I’d like to round out the column this week with some school news from the Crow-Applegate-Lorane School District that was generously supplied to me by Lil Thompson.

The Crow Middle/High School is taking part in the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) “Pennies for Patients” program from February 13 to 27. Students across the country are collecting pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters and the class collecting the most change in each school receives a pizza party. Prizes such as computers, electronics and sports equipment are presented to the top schools in each area. All money collected by the students goes to help find cures and ensure treatments for blood cancer patients! For more information or to donate, call the high school office at 541-935-2227.

Dr. Seuss week is coming soon to the Applegate Elementary and adult volunteers are being sought to read with the students. If you can volunteer from February 27 to March 2, call 541-935-2100 or email Megan Leturno at mleturno@cal.k12.or.us.

The school district is still looking for patrons to volunteer for the Budget Committee.  Contact Lee Ann at the district office, 541-935-2100, if you are interested.

For any of you who are contemplating having cataract surgery in the near future but are hesitant, I wanted to share that I just completed the removal of cataracts from both eyes over the past month and I am so glad that I did. The actual surgeries were pain-free with a bit of occasional scratchiness. After wearing glasses through my waking hours for 35 years, I now am facing the probability that I will no longer need them except, possibly, for reading. My biggest problem is the fact that if this is so, I now have to get reacquainted with the stranger that looks back at me from the mirror each day.

“Sunshine, lollipops and rainbows…” Well, maybe our days have not quite reached those particular sentiments expressed by Lesley Gore so many years ago, but this past week has certainly been an improvement over what we’ve been experiencing, weatherwise.

The Ukulele Club, sponsored by the Rural Art Center has resumed its lessons on Thursdays in the Crow Middle/High School music room. Age groups, 4th grade through adult, are invited to join them. Beginners meet from 4:15 to 5:30 p.m. and the class for those who have already had some lessons is at 3:30 to 4:15 p.m. each Thursday afternoon. If you’re interested, plan on joining them. From what I understand, it’s a fun group.

With all the dissension over politics on a national level these days, many people are feeling helpless about not really having a say in what is happening in our country. Individuals frequently cannot see how their efforts leave any major impact. But one way that you can see result of your caring is by serving your community in some way. By doing so, you can feel a rewarding sense of pride and accomplishment. Here are some great opportunities for area residents to make a real difference in our community.

Three positions are opening on the Lorane Fire Board and they are asking for applications from local residents who are interested in having a say in how our Lorane Rural Fire Department is run. Please contact a member of the Lorane RFPD for more information. The Fire Chief is Tom Soward and the Assistant Fire Chief is Jim Bailor. Go to their website at https://loraneorfd.samariteam.com to send a message or call and/or leave a message by phone at 541-942-1233.

In addition, the Crow-Applegate-Lorane School District #66 is seeking volunteer patrons to serve on the Budget Committee this year. They will hold 2-3 meetings in May and a meeting in June with the school board and administration. If you are interested, contact Lee Ann in the district office at 541-935-2100.

I hope that these positions fill rapidly. Help is needed and the time you spend in service to your community will bring rewards, not only to Lorane or Crow, but to yourself, as well.
